100 Words from a Picture

Post by Teresa »

Overview
This will be a “simple” writing competition to get everyone’s creative juices flowing. Over the course of the competition, everyone will submit drabbles to best represent the picture prompts given. A drabble for this competition will be limited to 100 words not including the title.
This competition will run for 10 weeks with a single deadline at the end. Judging will be on the entire body of work submitted. Every other week one picture will be posted. For each picture, submit an original drabble. Be creative; what does the picture make you think?
100 words is a hard limit – do not go over. This is a competition designed to encourage brevity. There will be a total of 5 pictures for a total of 5 stories. All stories must be submitted by the deadline of October 3rd. Judging will begin on October 4th and results will be posted by October 17th. Each story will be worth up to 20 points for a max total score possible of 100. By setting one deadline and judging on the entire submission of 5 stories, participants will have flexibility to work around school, work, and real life. As an option, you may include an image with the story; however, this will not count in judging. If you include an image, it must be taken in game.

Dates and Prompts:
• Week 1 // Post July 25th
• Week 3 // Post August 8th
• Week 5 // Post August 22nd
• Week 7 // Post September 5th
• Week 9 // Post September 19th

I wrote something up quick. It definitely got the creative juices flowing though.

Forget
Spoiler:
She stormed down the street, not looking back. Please don’t follow me, she thought. She didn’t cry, but she felt liked she should. She had given years to him, yet she knew this would happen.

“Maggie, please wait”, said a soft voice from behind her. It was his soft voice.

“Drew, please stop. We can’t keep doing this”.

“You’re right. Let’s just forget about this”.

“Forget”, she repeated, turning on him.

Drew pulled her into an embrace, gazing into her eyes. His lips met hers.

“What were you saying”, he asked. He pulled back slightly.

“I forget”.
Call me Micah or Ultimo. Never Mike. Just no.

This sounds like a lot of fun!
Spoiler:
Title: That One Scene

Cut!

The shower fizzled out. I patted my wet hair absentmindedly. This was only my second day on set and I was starstruck by my costar, Devon. His hair was somehow still perfect. I became suddenly aware of how stupid I must have looked patting my own head and felt a fierce blush come over me.

“Was it good?” he asked. “What?” I responded, flustered. “The kiss.” Oh, that. I tittered nervously. “I guess we’ll just have to try until we get it right,” he added mischievously. The blush threatened to immolate me right at Devon’s feet. What a job!

I'm not quite sure i get it, so from this first prompt, 5 different stories will emerge? Then following the next prompt, the next 5 stories will continue using the same plot as before?

For each prompt write a 100 word story. There will be 5 prompts so when it is over, you will have written 5 stories - 1 for each prompt. The prompts are not connected to each other.

Okay thank you! I hope this is okay, i tried to give it more depth >->

Embers
Spoiler:
I attempted to avoid his heated gaze and the fire that had lit in his eyes but the temptation was too much. It was always too much. As his lips crashed to mine i finally felt the warmth, the passion and the fulfillment that i had been craving for so long.
The embers that were burning low deep in my heart had finally been ignited once again and despite the pain and sorrow they might cause in years to come when they burn out, right now...not even the strongest of thunder storms could dispel our spark.

"Why?"
Spoiler:
She spotted him at work and immediately fell for him. After months of covert looks she finally had the nerve to ask him out. His response was thrilling because he said yes and she was giddy with nerves. Their first date had to be perfect, so she went shopping and bought a new dress and primped for hours. At the end of the date, it was time for the first kiss. Oh, my, here it comes! Finally! Um... wait... what is he doing? The disappointment was crushing when the kiss was wet and nasty. Her hopes were dashed.

Perfect
Spoiler:
From one glance, our family life used to look so perfect. We had the family, the dog and even the suburban house with the picket white fence. But it was too good to be true.
When the police came to question daddy he ushered us out towards the back where my little brother and I would spend hours alone. We would make stories different than our own and we fed ourselves false hope. Maybe we would have a mummy around again, maybe we would have food and just maybe we would get to see Mark again. It would truly be...Perfect.

Summer Afternoon
Spoiler:
It was the last afternoon of summer, the Sunday before school. Only one of us was heading off in the morning, but we knew that what we had was going to be put on hold -- shoved in the freezer until next year, when the grass grew green and the sun shone all day long. We went at it with one hundred and ten percent, trying to outrace the stretching shadows on the lawn. The sky was turning pink, and a pale moon hung over us. Once the crickets and cicadas crawled out of their caves, we knew. It was over.
I didn't participate in the previous rounds, but I'm just doing this for fun and inspiration. Is that alright?

Absolutely. And it is still possible to do the earlier rounds. There isn't a deadline for the rounds. So jump right on in.

Figured I'd give it a go. c:

Prompt 1:
Spoiler:
Having lived a life of clichés - good but poor childhood, then sudden rags to riches - she couldn't help but feel that a heated kiss in the rain was just what her life needed. It was his arms around her body, fingers on drenched fabric. As they embraced, he whispered four very simple words into her ear, and suddenly the rain felt constricting. Her wet clothes clung to her skin cloyingly and her hair was hanging in limp strings. Pulling away, she could see the confusion on his face. The rain got heavier, and she frowned.

"Rain check?"
Prompt 2:
Spoiler:
God, he loved old photos. Reminiscing was his past time, and at his age he had plenty to reminisce about. He'd inherited his mother's photo album and one picture stood out to him. It was him, the dog and his sister, playing on some nameless day in the summer. A family carving out a living with little resources. He had loved that dog. As for his sister... well, she grew on him.

Settling back, wrinkled hands caged the picture. All in that picture but him had passed on, now. But it was something he had accepted. Time was not forgiving.

Prompt 1:
Spoiler:
"Why don't we do it in the road?" he sang in my ear.

I gaped. "Seriously? Because it's pouring rain? Because gravel in your naughty bits is nasty?"

"You said we need to be spontaneous!"

"That's not what I had in mi-IIND!" I shrieked as he yanked me into the downpour.

"Just a kiss!" he pleaded.

"Kiss only!" I said. "No woohoo!"

He pulled me off my feet into his arms. My cold soggy clothes stuck to my skin. Water poured from his hair into my eyes.

All could think was how much I loved him. Still. Forever.

It is, and I apologize. School started and six writing classes have fried my brain. I will get the rest of the prompts posted this afternoon.

Prompt 1:
Spoiler:
Eric watched as Eliza walked down the street. She was beautiful, smart, and popular. Eric didn’t have a shot. As if to emphasize the thought, thunder cracked the sky and rain began pouring down. Eliza’s wet dress made Eric’s heart skip a beat.

He was running, almost without realizing it, and met Eliza in the middle of the street. Right there in the rain, he wrapped her in his arms, dipped her back, and kissed her lips.

Eric earned a hard slap and a few harsh words as his reward.

It was the best day of his life.
Prompt 2:
Spoiler:
Katie had never been a nice sister. She was big and bossy and mean. But Dylan had a plan. Molly the dog would help. It took hours to get Molly the dog to let him ride. It took seconds to put his plan into action.

In the back yard, where so many of Katie’s attacks took place, Dylan hopped on Molly the dog’s back and yelled, “Charge!”

Katie screamed and backed against the fence. She lifted a stick above her head, but she’d never hit them. Mama would be so mad if she did.

“I win!” yelled Dylan. “I win!”
